Evacuation plans are both directional and informational signs, and as such, they are required to comply with federal standards for both. That becomes difficult if you want the sign to also be small enough to be viewed by someone in a wheelchair or is of short stature. Even within those restraints, however, you can concentrate on high dark/light contrast, non-glare surfaces, and making the path of travel to the exit from the current location as easy to see as possible.
